Specialist in dream sites, aware of their fragility

We are always trying to integrate our Resorts as much as possible into the landscape, especially by using local construction techniques. Our Cefalù Resort in Sicily, illustrated on this photo, received an award at MIPIM for its construction for example.

Preservation of vegetation is a priority in our Resorts. All over the world we opt for natural or soft landscaped spaces, and less than 10% of the total surface area of our sites has hard landscaping. Depicted Resort is Rio das Pedras in Brazil >.

We have established partnerships with local environmental associations in more than 20 Resorts around the world.
The La Palmyre Atlantique Resort > in France has a partnership with the Bird Protection League for example.

Our 2021 objective was: ensure 100% of our Resorts get Green Globe-certification
Club Med’s commitment to sustainable tourism is built on solid foundations awarded by recognised international certification bodies:

• 100% of the construction of our new resorts or major renovations has been BREEAM eco-certified (or equivalent) since 2019
• 46 Resorts certified Green Globe for their sustainable management (87%)
• Ecoleader label by TripAdvisor® awarded to over 20 resorts
• Discovery Tours by Club Med certified as ATR (Act for Responsible Tourism) since 2017

1,000 ha primary forest reserve
For several decades at Rio das Pedras (Brazil) and Cherating (Malaysia).
Rio das Pedras for example is located in the Mata Atlantica, the second protected ecosystem in Brazil.
Club Med has its own ecological reserve there so you can enjoy an incredible immersion at the heart of the primary forest for example during the arranged daily walks.

Endemic plant species are conserved or transplanted
Protection of the vegetation
The endemic vegetation is always conserved or re-established.
At Miches Playa Esmeralda, our Resort in the Dominican Republic for example:
• Seeds were taken from plants and trees that were already on the site in order to preserve local species
• On-site nursery (300,000 plants were reused as part of the Resort's landscaping)
• Implementation of a tree replanting scheme, to conserve and relocate the trees that had to be removed during construction (2,000 trees preserved this way)

• The La Pointe aux Canonniers site in Mauritius, for example, is located in an area protected by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) which aims to protect coral.
• Our Seychelles Resort is located in the heart of a protected marine reserve. Club Med is committed to respecting this environment, more especially through obtaining eco-certification for the construction and daily management of its Resort.

...and it is also mostly recycled
Water, the most precious resource
• 100% of the water is treated and mostly recycled.
• 90% of the equipped Villages have flow reducers,
• 47% drip irrigation
• Special efforts have been made in water-stressed areas: 24.8% reduction in water consumption between 2010 and 2018 (in total).
• Biological water purification by plants at La Plantation d'Albion (Mauritius), Yasmina (Morocco) and Guilin (China).

Launched in 2018, this scheme aimed to remove single-use plastic from the bar, restaurant and rooms from 2021.

• Restoration: all single-use straws, cups, plastic plates and cutlery removed from all our Resorts around the world (excluding Brazil for cutlery).
• In rooms: all shower gels, shampoo and body lotion in our bathrooms are dispensed in large containers that can be reused in all our Resorts* (*excluding the Exclusive Collection range and Brazilian Villages.)
  By the end of 2020, all single-use plastic accessories will also be phased out, as is already the case in China.
• Since 2021, plastic water bottles were gradually replaced by glass bottles, recycled plastic, or other solutions.
• In the Alps, plastic water bottles are no longer been given out for treks. There are water fountains where guests can fill the bottles that were placed in their rooms on arrival. Reusable bottles are also available in our stores.

We have succeeded in reducing food waste per meal per person to just 101g thanks to more than 60 years of experience in hearty yet well researched buffets.

A remarkable performance for a group that is one of the lowest generators of avoidable waste.
Among our best practices:

• Optimised stock management
• Precision adjustment of quantities due to accurate planning for the number of guests and knowledge of what each nationality prefers
• Buffets equipped for cooking and final preparation on demand
• Portions of just the right size or served at the buffet by a cook
• Sensible restocking of buffets
• Recipes that enable some of the food that wasn’t eaten from buffets to be re-used
• Raising awareness with our customers
• Automated scrap weighing for menu optimisation with Winnow technology

With help from specialists, Club Med has been committed for several years to developing its best practices, in accordance with its values.

• Excursions:
  From 2021, Club Med will no longer offer circus activities, elephant rides or swimming with elephants nor observation of whales, dolphins and porpoises in captivity. We have been supporting our service providers in best practices in this area with the WCA (World Cetacean Alliance).
• “Free-range” eggs:
  Club Med is committed to sourcing 100% of eggs from hens raised out of cage in its Resorts in Europe, Brazil and the United States by 2025, and in other markets by 2027. In 2022, 49% of eggs (shell, liquid and ingredient) purchased by all Club Med locations around the world come from cage-free sources, including 100% of whole eggs in Europe in particular.
  This commitment is part of Club Med's purchasing policy, which states that all purchased products must meet the company's requirements for hygiene and health and safety.

Promotion of natural heritage and biodiversity: in over 20 Resorts, there are Nature activities to show people our sites’ natural resources.
An expert in their field, a Green G.O. leads educational activities touching on biodiversity and local culture, with a fun and interactive dimension.
In Cherating (Malaisia), Kani (Maldives) and soon in the Seychelles, "Green G.O.s” promote the resort’s natural heritage every day and offer G.M.s nature-based experiences.

Creative workshops using items washed up by the sea
Art workshops led by G.O.s focused on creating works of art from plastic items washed up by the sea to recycle items that are thrown away by people but that don’t belong in the sea.
These workshops stimulate children’s curiosity and educate them about everyday objects so that they become more aware of protecting the environment.
The objects are collected and cleaned by G.O.s, G.E.s and even key actors of the local community. G.M.s sometimes take part also under supervision.

Even the smallest actions can change things.
Promotion of environmentally friendly actions:

• G.M.s are encouraged to be eco-friendly in their daily life in the Resort; since 2020, they can say if they don’t want their towels to be washed every day; and since 2008 they’ve been educated about the option of compensating for their CO2 footprint; eco-friendly postures appear in over 13,000 rooms and G.M.s are also educated about food waste.
• Lots of Resorts run beach clean-ups. In 7 Resorts on three continents, sea turtles are protected according to the guidelines of the “Very Important Turtles” kit
• In Brazil and the Maldives, Club Med works actively to protect coral reefs and encourages G.M.s to sponsor coral re-implantation.

Club Med has launched its first outdoor game about discovering the natural treasures of the Resorts in Opio en Provence (France), Guilin (China), Cherating (Malaysia) and Bali (Indonesia).
You can set off to explore the natural and cultural heritage of the Opio Resort on your own, as a family or with friends, and discover how our G.O. and G.E. teams are committed to protecting it.
