Lapped by the waters of the Mediterranean, at the foot of the Pyrenees, Collioure has inspired painters such as Matisse and Chagall. Its narrow cobbled streets wind between two harbours, where brightly painted Catalan rowing boats bob on the waves. Ship at anchor, water sports available.

Day 3: Roses

The Catalan citadel is an ancient Greek colony founded in the 4th century BC by settlers from Marseille, and sits in a picturesque bay that is home to 16th-century fortifications and megalithic tombs. Boat at dock, nautical hall closed.

Day 4: Sanary-sur-Mer

Arrival at 12.00 Departure at 23.00

A typically Provençal village, its charming little port, which was already populated in Roman times, is home to the "pointus", the traditional, colourful Provençal sailing boats. Behind the port, the small streets with coloured houses in the historic centre offer a little coolness during the hot summer days. Boats at anchor, beach and water sports.

Day 5: Marseille
